Group Activity

When it comes to DE&I, it’s important to build slowly and create trust in a group. If your group lacks trust and psychological safety, consider asking 1-2 of open-ended questions such as, “What was relevant or interesting in this module?”, and “What is one ‘ah-ha’ moment or concept from this conversation about intent and impact”.

This group activity is designed to help us be more curious.  

As facilitators, encourage individuals to skim through the Deloitte article on the 6-Cs of inclusive leadership. 

Run of Show

Introduction and Agenda (5 min) 

Activity I (20 min) 

5 Whys 

Split people into pairs, with each person taking turns to share something about their DEI journey. The listener will ask the speaker ‘why’ 5 times. 

Five whys (or 5 whys) is an iterative interrogative technique used to explore the cause-and-effect relationships underlying a particular problem. The primary goal of the technique is to determine the root cause of a defect or problem by repeating the question "Why?". Each answer forms the basis of the next question. (Wikipedia) 

E.g., 

1. Why are you continuing to show up for DEI learning? 
2. Why is that important to you?
3. Why is that important to you?
4. Why is that important to you?
5. Why….?

Full Group Debrief: What came up by the 3rd or 4th time you were asked ‘why’? How did it make you feel, to dig deeper each time? 

Activity II (20 min)

For the section activity, work in groups of 3-4 to develop your personal curiosity calendar.

Spend 5-8 minutes picking activities that are interesting or relevant to you. Then take a few minutes to share with your group why you chose them, and in what ways they’ll help you get curious and about what. 

Closing (10 minutes) 

Wrap the meeting by asking each person to share:  

(a) one activity from their 21-day curiosity calendar
