Group Activity & Facilitation Guide

Group Activity

When it comes to DE&I, it’s important to build slowly and create trust in a group. If your group lacks trust and psychological safety, consider asking 1-2 of open-ended questions such as, “What was relevant or interesting in this module?”, and “What is one ‘ah-ha’ moment or concept from this conversation about intent and impact”.

This group activity is designed to help shift into active allyship at work.

As facilitators, encourage individuals to listen to Melinda Epler’s TedTalk.

Run of Show

Welcome and Agenda (5 min)

Activity (35 - 45 min)

Ahead of the group session, complete all sections of this module - including the solo activity.

Step 1: Begin with reflecting on the two questions at the end of the solo activity.

Split the group into pairs and allow each group a moment of reflection.

• What was one personal 'ah-ha' that each participant experienced during the module?

• What is something each person is willing to try doing differently?

Bring the group back and hear from a handful of pairs.

Step 2: Split the group in pairs or small groups of 3. Set the timer to 10-12 minutes and offer the following prompt. Each person should have 3-4 minutes to share.

Prompt: When you think about what you want to do differently:

  • what are you excited about
  • what makes you nervous
  • what, if any resources do you need, and;
  • what does accountability mean?

Bring the group back and ask for a handful of individuals to share back their conversation. Depending on the size of the group, you can ask each person to share their responses to #c and #d.

Step 3: Go back to pairs or small groups of 3. Set the timer to 10-12 minutes and offer the following prompt. Each person should have 3-4 minutes to share.

Prompt: What does success look like? If you consistently work on doing X differently, what changes will you see - in yourself, your team? What do you think the cumulative impact be, for yourself and your team?

Step 4: Bring the group back and ask for a handful of individuals to share back their conversation.

Closing (5 min)

Facilitator should be prepared to speak back about the potential impact of shifting just one behavior, habit and action.

Thank the group for their participation.
